Partial Load: Grievance Relating to Full Time Positions Resolved

Last year, interviews were held at Durham College to fill two full time teaching positions. Five Durham Partial Load faculty were interviewed. After the interviews were completed, Durham management concluded that NONE of the five Partial Load interviewees were acceptable due to insufficient teaching experience.

Your local union leadership grieved this decision under Article 27.11 B. The grievance went forward through Step 1 and Step 2 and was scheduled for arbitration in the fall of 2014.

Fortunately, two partial load candidates who were earlier denied full time positions have recently learned that they WILL be given full time, effective this summer. Accordingly, the arbitration date is no longer necessary in respect of this grievance.

We feel that the added pressure of an impending arbitration had an effect on management.
