Temporary Coverage for Absent Colleagues
There are occasions when a member is unable to be in class (or fulfil other duties such as invigilation, labs) due to various reasons (health , personal, conferences). The union’s position on this is that management must revise the SWF of the faculty member who agrees to cover. We also agree that this is on a short term basis and if the coverage is prolonged, management must find alternative coverage.
There is potential here for management to favour members when giving permission to cover for other members. Recently, this practice appears to be occurring with greater frequency. These are the reasons the Union wishes to clarify its position on this matter. Reminders have been given to those areas where this has occurred.
If a faculty member is ill, it is inappropriate for that faculty member to ever be expected to “make up” the hours.
