Join us for an important online General Membership Meeting (GMM) on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 6:30 pm. During the meeting, we will be holding interim elections and addressing both the current restructuring at the college and the impact of the impending addition of more than 500 new part-time members.
Elections: The Local is currently looking to fill the interim roles of Chief Steward and Secretary until Spring 2026, at which time the next full round of elections will be held for all positions. Both roles are officers within the Local Executive Committee, so anyone interested in the positions must first be an elected steward.
To become a steward or an officer, a nomination form should be completed beforehand, or a verbal nomination can be made in person at the meeting. Any member in good standing with a signed union card can nominate another member for a steward position. The nomination forms can be found here: https://opseu354.ca/nomination-forms/. A description of the various roles is also located on our website here: https://opseu354.ca/local-executive-roles-and-responsibilities/.
There are no limits to the number of stewards we can have representing members at the ground level, so we are always happy to welcome any members into that entry role. We always welcome any new nominations for trustees, whose role it is to review the Local’s finances twice a year to ensure our budget is balanced. Trustees cannot be a steward or hold another role in the Local Executive Committee, but it is a great way to get involved and gain some insight into the work the Local does.
College Restructuring: We will provide an update on the latest restructuring plans at the college following the recent layoff announcement for support staff and admin personnel. The College Employment Stability Committee (CESC) continues to meet with senior leadership to discuss their financial goals, and our next meeting is set for April 3rd.
Part-time certification update: We will also provide an update from the recent provincial town hall for part-time and sessional faculty who will soon be joining our local. This influx of new members will provide unique challenges for the Local, and new bylaws will need to be created to address questions surrounding our strike fund and representation on our executive.
