Campaign for Quality Education: Launch of “Report on Education in Ontario Colleges”
A new report investigates alarming developments in Ontario colleges including privatization, massive growth of part time and contract teachers, and a massive move to hybrid and on-line teaching.
The official launch of the report (and a report summary) was held on Thursday, April 24, in Toronto. Several speakers attended including OPSEU President Warren “Smoky” Thomas, Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations representative Graeme Stewart, and Canadian Federation of Students, Ontario, representative Allistair Woods.
The report documents long-term trends in the Ontario public college system including the colleges’ history, trends in government funding, faculty workload and expansion of contract teaching, expanding ranks of administration, trends in online course delivery, and academic freedom concerns. The report also makes recommendations aimed at re-establishing a role for teachers in future decision making in the Ontario college system.
